How Much Do Pharmacy Technicians Get Paid?

Have you ever considered what it would be like to work in a pharmacy? Interacting with patients throughout the day, receiving dropped-off prescriptions, communicating with medical offices, measuring out and filling prescriptions- if this is the kind of work day that sounds good to you, you’ve come to the right place. In the United States on average, an entry level pharmacy technician earns about $35,000-$40,000 every year. This number however, such is the case in most industries, is dependent on that technician’s skill level and capabilities. While many people apply to these pharmacy tech jobs without having received any sort of formal training, NYICD gives our students that edge on their competitors by making sure that on day 1 of their new career, they’ve already been trained to properly execute all the skills required of them with ease.

What better way to secure yourself as the lead applicant for a job opening at your local CVS than the networking and experience gained working as an extern in that pharmacy for months before you apply for that job? Who do you think the hiring manager is more likely to trust- an outside applicant with no formal training, or the extern who has been working inside that pharmacy for months while completing a comprehensive online course? Not only that- which applicant do you think will be offered more money?

Beyond employee experience and skill level, another thing than can have an influence on how much a technician is paid is the location at which they chose to work. Certain national pharmacy names have a better reputation than others when it comes to fair, reasonable compensation for their employees. CVS and Walgreens are two namable brands who sit at the top of that list. A few others worth looking into include Safeway (one of the highest with starting salaries rumored closer to the $40,000 end of the spectrum) and Rite Aid.

The researchers at Payscale did some digging in order to find out whether pharmacy technicians in general throughout the United States were satisfied with the amount of money they were currently being paid. On a scale of 1-5, pharmacy technician clocked in on the much more positive end of the career spectrum according to these results, with a national average of 4 out of 5 (of 2,574 pharmacy technicians who elected to participate). Shouldn’t one of those satisfying careers be yours?
